What is
hand stripping?

Hand stripping is a grooming technique in which a trained groomer removes loose, dead hairs from a wire-coated dog's outer coat by hand or with specialist tools. It differs from clipping, which cuts the hair.

The details matter—especially when they move between pet owners, bookings, care and repeat visits.

01

When is it used?

It is commonly associated with certain wire-coated dogs. The individual coat matters more than the breed name alone.

02

How is it different from clipping?

Clipping trims hair with scissors or clippers. Hand stripping removes loose mature hair to maintain a wire-coat texture.

03

Should it hurt?

Proper technique should not involve forcefully pulling attached hair. If the pet seems uncomfortable or has sensitive skin, stop and speak to an experienced groomer.

04

Can I do it myself?

Coat condition and timing are important. Ask a qualified groomer to show what is appropriate for your individual dog.

05

What should I ask the groomer?

Ask about experience with your dog's coat, how they assess readiness, how long sessions take and whether a different method is gentler.

06

How often is it needed?

There is no universal schedule. Coat growth, coat condition and the grooming method determine the interval.

The simple version

How it works.

  1. Identify the coat type

Is your dog's outer coat truly wire-haired, and is the dead coat ready to come out?

  2. Ask a trained groomer

Discuss technique, pet comfort and whether hand stripping suits this particular dog.

  3. Keep good care notes

Record grooming preferences and appointments in the pet's profile.

Answers, not buzzwords

Questions people ask.

Is hand stripping the same as shaving a dog?

No. Shaving or clipping cuts hairs. Hand stripping removes loose, mature coat hairs and is mainly relevant to particular wiry coats.

Does every terrier need hand stripping?

No. Coat type, health and individual grooming goals matter. Some terriers do not have coats suited to stripping.

Is hand stripping painful?

Careful removal of hair that is ready to come out should not be forceful. Technique and coat condition matter, and an experienced groomer should prioritise comfort.

Where can I learn more?

The American Kennel Club has a detailed guide to hand stripping dog coats, including when it is appropriate and how trained groomers carry it out.
